Race Date: October 14th. Once again we delved into Burbank for an epic race. Burbank is a tricky town, the people, the cops, no fun is allowed. Think if we lost the Second World War, Burbank is what the rest of the country would be like. After careful planning we were able to race the Scenic Root. This was truly a driver’s course. There was wet pavement, cement, water channels, cobblestones, a possible jump, and a banked turn, all on a 11% grade. Eleven is not a big number but an 11% grade is very steep. As the first heat commenced, cars towards the front began to turn sideways on their own. By the time we hit the cobblestones, several drivers had lost control of their soapbox racers. Many racers spun out of control and a few more were ejected from their cars and spun around in the air as the pile up increased in size. A few drivers rolled, got ejected and were hit by oncoming traffic. The carnage was tremendous. The first heat we had 29 racers, the second we had 14. Out of the half that did not race had cars too damaged to run again, the others had “the fear” and did not want to risk another run. The second run also was very hard on the cars and a few more were added to the causality list. This race separated the men from the boys for sure.
