It
was a cool overcast morning on the 13th of August. The road we used
for a track this time terminated into a park where there was no sign of a human
presence except the mattress lodged into a small cave on the hillside. One by
one the old vans, pickups and forward control trucks started to roll up through
the dust loaded with smiling faces and their soapbox racers. The numbers reached
8 cars this time and we all lined up according to a playing card to have
arbitrary allotment of the cars location on the start line. Location was crucial
as this track lived up to its namesake. The Malachi Crunch could accommodate all
the races in a tight formation at the start but then it quickly bottlenecked to
a tight two-car lane. This feature of course led to loads of bumping and ramming
as the races jockeyed for position on the track. The first heat went to Ray O’
Sunshine followed closely by a group of racers. The next heat had three cars
tangle up at the start causing one of them to bound over the other two tangled
drivers. The two finally got back to racing and swerved and bashed their way
down the track to the finish. Four runs were completed, no injuries despite the
entrance of rough driving. After three races, the driver’s thought is was time
to liven things up a bit by adding a little mean wheel turning to the mix. See
you at the next one.
